Adult Autism Clinic | UW Medicine

University of Washington Adult Autism Clinic
University of Washington Medical Center
(UW Medicine) is pleased to announce the development of its Adult Autism Clinic. UW Medicine has collaborated with the Seattle Children’s Autism Center to develop this service designed to meet the complex needs of individuals over 18 years of age with autism spectrum disorders.

The Adult Autism Clinic is located on the 3rd floor of the UW Medical Center – Roosevelt  Building at 4225 Roosevelt Way, Suite 306, in the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic.  This location provides convenient access to other UW Medicine diagnostic and clinic services, including women’s health, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy and internal medicine.

In this first phase, Dr. Gary Stobbe, neurologist and clinic medical director, will be assessing the health needs common to adults with autism spectrum disorders to determine those elements that can be met best within the clinic operation and by referral to other UW Medicine health care professionals.  It is anticipated that key elements of the Adult Autism Clinic will include:

  • Behavioral medicine services including medication management and mental health assessments
  • Autism spectrum diagnostic evaluations
  • Family support, resource identification, and social services for patients and their families
  • Care management support to individuals and their families
  • Support group meetings
  • Educational programs led by experts in the field of autism and related disorders

To schedule your appointment, please call the clinic at 206.598.7792

Cassandra Wozniak, MS, CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist

Have you ever wondered how it is that others make conversation look so easy?  Have you felt confused by someone’s response to something you’ve said or done?  Have you ever offended someone and not understood why?  Functioning well in our social world requires more than a discrete set of skills – it requires one to think and evaluate social interactions flexibly – an understanding that context matters, that others have thoughts separate from our own and that for most, being accepted is more important than being “right.”

Learn the foundation for improved social interactions at home, in the community and at work, in a safe, supportive atmosphere.  Therapist’s treatment method relies heavily on Michelle Garcia Winner’s Social Thinking approach and incorporates direct teaching, discussion and role-playing, with an emphasis on functional and measurable improvement in clients’ daily lives.  Executive function skills treatment offered separately or in conjunction with the above treatment objectives as well (improved time management, planning, organization, etc.)  Most major insurance plans accepted.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development – Toolkit

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center - Toolkit
New toolkit helps providers address mental health challenges of youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Children/Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are disproportionately affected by mental health challenges, a disparity that is heightened by too few mental health providers who are trained to serve this population.

The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development has come out with a tool kit that, while directed at health care of adults with IDD, can be used for children with IDD as well. The toolkit also includes disability-specific Health Watch Tables. The IDD Toolkit is now available online.

The toolkit offers health care providers best-practice tools and a wealth of information regarding specific medical and behavioral concerns of adults with IDD, including resources for patients and families
